Class Descriptions

Advanced Loud Band Intensive

with Robert Wiemken, Director

This program will allow a select group of advanced players of cornetto, shawm, sackbut and dulcian the opportunity to focus their entire week at the Madison Festival on forming and polishing a historically-based reed and brass ensemble such as flourished in Spanish courts, cities, and towns during the 16th and early 17th centuries, the so-called Spanish Golden Age in art, music, an dliterature.. The program will consist of three sessions a day.

1st session:
Ensemble technique and repertoire

2nd morning session:
A – advanced double reed technique and repertoire (shawm and dulcian)
B – sackbut technique (with Greg Ingles)

3rd session:
first afternoon loud band class - polishing repertoire

Emphasis will be placed on the sacred works of Tomás Luis de Victoria and Francisco Guerrero, and the famous cancioneros published during this period, including those from Medinaceli and Sablonara, and the Liber Tonos Humanos. A number of selections of the music in the Intensive will be read from original notation, requiring a comfortable facility in various clefs and transpositions.

The week's efforts will culminate in an hour-long recital open to the Festival participants and the general public on Saturday, July 15, the final day of the Festival week. Participation by permission of the instructor. Maximum of 8 participants. For further information, contact Bob Wiemken at bob@piffaro.com.
